Why is my espresso machine showing a flowmeter error?

31st Jan 2024

As a coffee shop owner (or even a home-coffee enthusiast!) it’s essential that your espresso machine works perfectly. However, like any complex appliance, espresso machines can encounter issues. One of these issues may be shown as a flowmeter error. Unsure of what the flowmeter error might indicate? We’ve put together this list of potential reasons why the flowmeter error might be displayed as well as reasons to replace your current flowmeter to a new one.

There are three main reasons as to why your flowmeter may need to be replaced:

1. Coffee grounds

The flowmeter error may be visible on your espresso machine when coffee grinds have entered into the body of your flowmeter, causing it to stop working. Depending on the amount of coffee grinds inside the flowmeter body, this may be salvageable.

2. Overheating

Your flowmeter could also stop working due to overheating. Unfortunately, flowmeters do have a tendency to overheat, and once they do, you will almost certainly have to replace it.

3. Leaks

If you flowmeter is leaking, it may have a crack in the body or other elements. Due to this, the flowmeter will most definitely need to be replaced.

When checking your flowmeter, do ensure that you inspect it properly, as sometimes, it is only the impeller that needs to be replaced instead of the entire flowmeter.

Now you know what may be causing your flowmeter error - but are there other ways that may indicate that your flowmeter needs to be replaced?

If your group is no longer supplying water, this may indicate that your flowmeter needs to be looked at and perhaps replaced. Similarly, if the panel’s display is no longer appearing or if the the light is no longer on in the LED, your flowmeter is most likely faulty. Finally, if you’re having trouble using the volumetric button, it is most certainly the flowmeter that is causing the issue.
